quote of the day: colorblindness

"To be blind to color is to be blind to the consequences of color."

I didn't catch who had said that, but it's true.

There's a lot to be said for that, and I agree!
We try to race our daughter to be aware of her color, and her multi cultural background, but not to let it define who she is.
it's a hard thing to do in the US, people really feel the need to put you in different boxes.
To some she's black, to some she's white.
She's neither. Or both.

Cecilia... yes. I sometimes tell people that coming to the US meant, for me, to learn that I am white. And to accept, or not, or to try reject - but boy isn;t that almost impossible - the privilege that comes with that. It's hard to when color means so many things. Sometime it's just hierarchical, meaning more or less status. Sometimes it means 'ethnic', 'exotic', or other meant to be positive but still demeaning things. But your daughter is forced to learn early on what some of us fail to grasp as grown ups. That's cool I think.
